MOTORIZED PARAGLIDING / PARAMOTORING - FAQ




Q1  Is a license require to fly a Motorized Paraglider (MPG)?
In Malaysia, a student Pilot License (SPL) is required to learn how to fly.  Later, it is possible to carry out a simple flying test to have this upgraded to a Private Pilot License (Restricted) or PPL(R).


Q2  How long does it take to learn to fly?
For a complete novice, it will take around 5 to 10 days to achieve complete freedom on a paramotor.  These training days typically consist of controlling the wing on the ground and a tandem flight.  After this, the student will move on to radio-instructed paramotor flights.  In around 4 to 5 days, it is possible to finish a basic course.  Subsequently, advanced training courses are highly recommended.



Q3  What is the maximum wind speed a paramotor can fly in?
A the maximum speed of the paraglider wing.  Their speeds are between 20 km/h = minimum speed and 45 to 50 km/h, this will depend on the type of wing.  The average speed is around 40 km/h.  Contrary to what might be thought, a more powerful engine will not make a faster ride, but it will offer a quicker climb to altitude.  No matter which engine is used, the horizontal air speed will always be the same if using the same wing.


Q4  How high can an MPG fly?
MPG's have a maximum altitude of about 10,000 ft (3000meters).  However, the most fun and entertaining flying is 'low and slow'.  The MPG's can be flown safely only a few meters above the ground though they are most often flown at an altitude of about 30 to 100 meters for the best view.


Q5  Can an MPG carry passenger?
YES.  An MPG can be fitted with a tandem harness allowing a pilot to fly with a passenger.  Total take-off weight restrictions apply depending on canopy size and engine power.



 
Q6  What happens if the engine stops?
Paraglider wings perform much the same as any airplane wing.  In the unlikely event of an engine failure or it runs out of fuel, the MPG will glide safely to the ground.
 

Q7  Which type of fuel does an MPG use?
Any car petrol is suitable, used in a mixture with synthetic 2-stroke oil beginning at 4% for a new motor, then 3%, finally 2% mixture [ = 1/25, 1/33, and then 1/50 ].  It is very important to add synthetic oil or mineral oil at 4% [ 1/25 ] in normal use to avoid overheating or seizing problems.  There is almost no other maintenance required to these motors, which are extremely robust.


Q8  How much does a paramotor weight?
Paramotors range from around 18kg, up to a maximum of around 35kg.  Weight is very critical as a too heavy paramotor is very difficult for ground handling and takeoff.  Once in the air, the combined weight of paramotor and pilot, is suspended by the wing - just like sitting in an armchair!  Although having minimum weight is important, a paramotor must have enough power for the pilot and aircraft.  Around 4kg for every 5 liters of fuel must be added to calculate the overall takeoff weight.


Q9  Which type of paragliding canopy can be used with a paramotor?
Any paraglider designed and constructed for foot launching can be used, although the best are those modified specifically for paramotoring.  Ozone wings offer several specialized wings including the 'Mojo' with special paramotor risers.


Q10  Is it possible to take off from anywhere?
Technically, it is possible to take off from almost anywhere, as long as conditions are right; taking off into the wind, not set up in the wind shadow of a mountain, building or similar.  For utmost safety, always fly in good weather conditions.  A football pitch size field is an example of a suitable paramotor take-off area.

Usually, it is not legally permissible to take-off 'JUST ANYWHERE'; notably too close to towns, and of course near airfields or in restricted areas.  However, permission can be obtained from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) on a case-by-case basic for specific events as required.

Local rules and airspace restrictions around the flying area must be checked.  Every country has different air laws; and while the general guidelines are the same worldwide, local details may differ.


Q11  What you need to bring during training?
Training will be conducted at a large field near the coast and there is only one tree to seek shelter.  Hence, bring plenty of drinking water and other refreshments for training sessions, as there is no shops within walking distance.  A small towel is also useful. 


Q12  What is a proper attire during training?
The initial field training sessions can be quite warm as some physical activity is required.  Remember to dress cool, comfortable and casual with shorts, T-shirt and a hat.  For footwear, flat-soled trainers are recommended.  NO sandals or slippers are advised.  Hiking or trainer boots are highly recommended as these provide more ankle support and grip.  Don't forget the SUN BLOCK, and insect repellent!


Q13  Where is the training venue?
Tentatively, all training sessions is held at Pulau Indah, which is in the vicinity of Klang, Malaysia.  There are excellent seafood restaurants and other Klang gastronomic delights to fill your stomach after a hard day training.


Q14  Are there any limitations?
All participants must be 18 years old and above, with matured mind and able to listen to instructions.  Your weight preferable do not exceed 80kg.


Q15  Is Paramotoring safe?
There is always a risk factor in adventurous activities, however, we are happy to announce that we have never encountered any major injuries during training with the instructor, other than some bruises from ground handling.


Q16  Do I need to have my own equipment?
During training, all equipment will be provided.  Upon completion of the basic course, you may rent our equipment for a nominal fee. 


INTRODUCTION TO MOTORIZED PARAGLIDER (MPG)




What is Motorized Paraglider / Paramotoring?
Motorized paraglider / paramotoring is essentially paragliding with a motor.  With paramotor, you have a giant propeller strapped behind  you to provide thrust and therefore, relying less on certain wind factors during take off and in flight.  The thrust generated by the propeller enable the pilot to take off from the ground and control the flying altitude.  The equipment weights varies from about 15kg to 30kg to commensurate the pilot's weight and flying preference.  Paramotor can either be foot launched or wheel launched.

Paramotor would probably be the most affordable form of powered flight.  The running cost is very low, with just a few litres of petrol would enable hours of flying fun.


Is it safe?
Paramotor is one of the safest form of aviation, in any form of aviation there are risks.  With proper training and instructions, the risks can be well managed.  The rewards and personal challenge as a pilot in command on the other hand are just tremendous.


Why learn to fly a Motorized Paraglider / Paramotor?
  • It is easy and rewarding; With proper training and equipment - it is very SAFE.
  • Paramotor offers flying like no other type of aircraft in that it is possible to fly high and far or low and slow - All at your command.
  • It is undoubtedly the least form of powered flight.  The equipment is most certainly less expensive than most other powered aircraft and a day in the sky will only cost a few dollars in fuel bills.
  • The  equipment is portable and easily transported to any location providing an infinite variety of flying locations.  With careful pre-trip preparation and packing, motorized paragliders can often be checked in on commercial flights, thereby increasing the range of flying opportunities to almost anywhere on the planet.
  • For many it is the challenge of flying an aircraft as pilot in command.
  • For others, it is the challenge of learning to fly an aircraft which requires a higher level of environment awareness and physical skills than flying normal fixed wing aircraft.
  • Paramotoring also offers one of the best platforms for aerial photography because of the virtually unrestricted field of view from the harness; in addition to the ability to fly in low and slow to capture excellent stills or video.
  • Other exciting aspects of paramotoring include competitions, cross country and social flying events.

About Motorized Paraglider (MPG) Training Course

Are you ready to fulfill the dreams of flight where you run, flap your arms and take off! 

Motorised Paragliding/Paramotoring is a form of ultralight avaiation sport.  For some, it is an extreme sport and for another, a weekend hobby.  With proper training, an awareness of the surroundings and discipline, it is a safe sport where you are in command.  With it's powered flight and gliding speed, you can admire the scenery and take some excellent photography.
 
The course is made up of mini lectures and intensive field work and flying tasks.  On satisfactory completion of the course requirements, you'll be able to fly unsupervised and enjoy being your own pilot in command.
